MSR Hubba Hubba: 5-Star Nylon

Is it expensive? Yes.
Is it over-hyped? Probably.
It is worth it? Absolutely.

Whether you love it or hate it, the MSR Hubba Hubba has cemented itself as one of the most popular backpacking tents in the world. Equipping adventurers for more than 50 years, MSR has a reputation for engineering cutting-edge, high-quality gear and the Hubba Hubba is no exception.

Proudly gushed about by influencers of all kinds, this tent has a cult-like following. I know it made my list in part to the overwhelming amount of times it showed up on my feed. It’s hard to not crush on a tent that sounds as good as it looks.

I joined the MSR Hubba Hubba club in the spring of 2022 and haven’t looked back! I use this tent for not just backcountry camping (which – my God – does it excel at!) but for my drive-in sites as well. It’s the kind of quality that’s hard to beat or go back from.

Pros:Cons:
– lightweight. 2lbs. 14 oz.
– freestanding
– waterproof
– spacious with doors on
both sides with vestibules
– durable and high-quality
storm-proof design
– easy hub-and-pole system for
quick set up
– expensive at $500
– zipper gets snagged

Looking at my old tent, there’s just no comparison. Somehow the Hubba Hubba 2 makes my old 4-person tent seem smaller and more claustrophobic. The Hubba’s design allows you to comfortably sit up and stretch out, plus the double-sided vestibules and doors add great storage for shoes and packs. Featuring a mesh roof for star-gazing and all the lying-in-nature vibes you could ask for, this tent is an experience. I’ve never been more tempted to risk a fly-free night as I have with the Hubba Hubba.

Of course, there are plenty of other great options out there. I struggled to choose between the MSR Elixer, the Big Agnes 2, and the Nemo Aurora. And all are amazing! Tents are one of the most discussed pieces of gear. And for good reason too! They’re your home away from home, the flimsy shield between you and nature’s surprises, and a sense of security that’s invaluable.

As for me, the Hubba Hubba is the best piece of gear I’ve ever owned. Despite the price tag shock, I can’t imagine a better tent to spend the next several years traveling around the world with. I have the peace of mind knowing this equipment is more than capable and I can’t wait to scale mountains with it.
